What is golf ball compression? Compression is a technical term used to explain the density of the ball and how much it compresses when a force, like your club, strike it. This term usually explains how hard or soft a ball is. Most balls are scored on a compression rating scale of 70-110. 70 being soft, 110 being hard.

How can you tell the compression rating of your ball? Some balls have a number printed right on the ball itself. This is usually the compression rating. Manufacturers will often print this score on the packaging of the ball.

Which compression is good for me? The general rule with compression is that players with a slower swing should use a lower compression, or softer, ball. This way they can take advantage of the spring effect that the ball give when the club face strikes it. Players with faster swings should use higher compression balls. The greater force on impact on a softer ball can sometimes ’squish’ it too much and loose the effect of the ball. The harder balls will be able to take this greater force without loosing the effect of the ball.

Keep in mind that this is a ‘general rule’ and not true for all players. Some just like the feel of a softer ball, while others like the added distance of the harder balls.

Which ball to choose? There are a lot of different balls out there that are considered soft.  To see some of these models, please take a look at our store link above or any of the other product links on this site.
